"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" by Mark Twain

Tom said to himself that it was not such a hollow world, after all. He had discovered a great law of human action, without knowing it—namely, that in order to make a man or a boy covet a thing, it is only necessary to make the thing difficult to attain. If he had been a great and wise philosopher, like the writer of this book, he would now have comprehended that Work consists of whatever a body is obliged to do, and that Play consists of whatever a body is not obliged to do. And this would help him to understand why constructing artificial flowers or performing on a tread-mill is work, while rolling ten-pins or climbing Mont Blanc is only amusement. There are wealthy gentlemen in England who drive four-horse passenger-coaches twenty or thirty miles on a daily line, in the summer, because the privilege costs them considerable money; but if they were offered wages for the service, that would turn it into work and then they would resign.

hollow - words, events, or people that are hollow have no real worth or value

ex) They won, but it was a hollow victory.

ex) Even as he spoke, Ivan was well aware of the hollow ring to his words.

namely - used when saying the names of the people or things you are referring to

ex) Three students were mentioned, namely John, Sarah and Sylvia.

covet - to have a very strong desire to have something that someone else has

ex) The Michelin Awards are coveted by restaurants all over the world.

obligate - to make someone have to do something, because it is the law, their duty, or the right thing to do SYN obligebe

obligated to do something

ex) Tenants are obligated to pay their rent on time.

construct - to form something such as a sentenceargument, or system by joining words, ideas etc together

ex) Boyce has constructed a new theory of management.

privilege -  a special advantage that is given only to one person or group of people

ex) He had no special privileges and was treated just like every other prisoner.

privilege of

ex) the privilege of a good education

So endeth this chronicle. It being strictly a history of a boy, it must stop here; the story could not go much further without becoming the history of a man. When one writes a novel about grown people, he knows exactly where to stop—that is, with a marriage; but when he writes of juveniles, he must stop where he best can.

Most of the characters that perform in this book still live, and are prosperous and happy. Some day it may seem worth while to take up the story of the younger ones again and see what sort of men and women they turned out to be; therefore it will be wisest not to reveal any of that part of their lives at present.

strictly -  in a way that must be obeyed

ex) Alcohol is strictly forbidden on school premises.

ex) The ban on hunting is not strictly enforced.

juvenile -  silly and typical of a child rather than an adult – used to show disapproval SYN childish

ex) a very juvenile sense of humour

prosperous - rich and successful

ex) a prosperous landowner
