The New York Times has filled the entire front page of Sunday’s paper with the death notices of COVID-19 victims from across the country.

In a decision the paper said was intended to convey the vastness and variety of the tragedy, the front page is a simple list of names and personal details taken from obituaries around the US.

The headline is “US deaths near 100,000, an incalculable loss”, with a sub-heading that reads: “They were not simply names on a list. They were us.”

 

뉴욕 타임즈는 일요일자 신문 1면 전체를 전국의 COVID-19 희생자들의 사망 공지로 채웠다.

그 신문이 그 비극의 방대함과 다양성을 전달하기 위해 의도한 결정에서, 1면은 미국 전역의 부관으로부터 취해진 간단한 이름과 개인적인 세부사항들의 목록이다.

헤드라인은 "미국의 사망자수, 헤아릴 수 없는 손실"이며 "그들은 단순히 명단에 이름이 오른 것이 아니었다"는 부제목이다. 그들은 우리였소."

Cases of serious crimes in South Africa have plummeted since local authorities imposed a lockdown in late March. But police still have been kept busy apprehending people for breaking the rules aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

There were 1,072 murders committed in the country between March 27 and May 19, a 64% drop from the same period a year ago. Assault was down 80% and robbery with aggravating circumstances fell by 64% over the period.

The police have meanwhile logged 230,000 contraventions of the lockdown rules, including violations of bans on large gatherings and alcohol and tobacco sales.

 

남아공에서 심각한 범죄는 지난 3월 말 현지 당국이 폐쇄 조치를 내린 이후 급감하고 있다. 그러나 경찰은 여전히 코로나바이러스 확산을 막기 위한 규정을 어긴 사람들을 체포하기 위해 분주히 움직이고 있다.

3월 27일부터 5월 19일까지 전국에서 발생한 살인사건은 1072건으로 1년 전 같은 기간보다 64% 감소했다. 이 기간 동안 폭행은 80% 감소했고, 악화된 상황을 가진 강도는 64% 감소했다.

The plight of an animal known as Pakistan’s loneliest elephant is set to come to an end after a court declared he should be freed from Islamabad zoo – to the delight of his longtime champion, pop icon Cher.

Kaavan, a 33-year-old Asian elephant from Sri Lanka, has been the focus of a four-year campaign by Cher to secure his release after the singer saw pictures of him living alone and held in chains in a small enclosure.

The Islamabad high court ruled that Kaavan should be freed, and ordered wildlife officials to consult with Sri Lanka to find him a “suitable sanctuary” within 30 days.

이슬라마바드 고등법원은 카아반을 석방해야 한다고 판결했으며, 야생동물 관리들은 스리랑카와 상의해 30일 이내에 카아반을 '적당한 성지'로 찾도록 명령했다.
