Daily Section - Book

(with. Paul Matthews)

1. They say that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure and one school teacher in the UK is now much richer after finding a rare copy of a Harry Potter book that had been thrown away in a skip. Sometimes it really does pay to sort your trash properly!

sort - to put things in a particular order or arrange them in groups according to size, type etc

ex) The eggs are sorted according to size.

sort something into something

ex) Let’s sort all the clothes into piles.

ex) All the names on the list have been sorted into alphabetical order.

2. We know Bill Clinton best as the 42nd President of the United States of America, but he’s also a bestselling novelist. Clinton has just announced his second collaboration with James Patterson - a crime novel called The President’s Daughter. Due out in June 2021, it promises to be thrilling read.

3. We’re all in need of some good news these days and one story from last week stands out for how lovely it is. Actor Peter Gordon wrote a poem for his wife every day for a quarter of a century and even after her death continues to write. Now his family has set up a website so that everyone can share the love.

"The Trial" by Frank Kafka

Someone must have been telling lies about Josef K., he knew he had done nothing wrong but, one morning, he was arrested. Every day at eight in the morning he was brought his breakfast by Mrs. Grubach's cook - Mrs. Grubach was his landlady - but today she didn't come. That had never happened before. K. waited a little while, looked from his pillow at the old woman who lived opposite and who was watching him with an inquisitiveness quite unusual for her, and finally, both hungry and disconcerted, rang the bell. There was immediately a knock at the door and a man entered. He had never seen the man in this house before. He was slim but firmly built, his clothes were black and close-fitting, with many folds and pockets, buckles and buttons and a belt, all of which gave the impression of being very practical but without making it very clear what they were actually for.

landlady - a woman who rents a room, building, or piece of land to someone → landlord

2. interested in a lot of different things and wanting to find out more about them → curious

ex) a cheerful, inquisitive little boy

ex) an inquisitive mind

Who was that? A friend? A good person? Somebody who was taking part? Somebody who wanted to help? Was he alone? Was it everyone? Would anyone help? Were there objections that had been forgotten? There must have been some. The logic cannot be refuted, but someone who wants to live will not resist it. Where was the judge he'd never seen? Where was the high court he had never reached? He raised both hands and spread out all his fingers.

But the hands of one of the gentleman were laid on K.'s throat, while the other pushed the knife deep into his heart and twisted it there, twice. As his eyesight failed, K. saw the two gentlemen cheek by cheek, close in front of his face, watching the result. "Like a dog!" he said, it was as if the shame of it should outlive him.

refute - to prove that a statement or idea is not correct SYN rebut

outlive

1 to remain alive after someone else has died

ex) She outlived her husband by 20 years.

2 to continue to exist after something else has ended or disappeared → outlast

ex) Good books have a way of outliving those who want to ban them.
